Power Of Soul

Originally formed in 1988 by Glitter Band sax player Harvey Ellison the Power of Soul were in the vanguard of English Soul outfits in those pre Commitments days, and after a first very successful gig in The Plough in Kenton and their discovery by an agent who provided live music for the U.S. bases in Europe, the band were spending more time on Autobahns than on the M1.

Just as the Beatles honed their talents in Hamburg’s Star Club the Power of Soul had to totally recreate “the real thing” for an audience of American service men who were accustomed to the real thing. This experience ensured that on the band’s UK return they rapidly became one of the most popular Soul acts in the country.

Founder members Gavin Barnett (bass ex Albert Lee) and Ted Cullen (trombone ex Scratch Perry) have kept the flag flying for Classic Soul music and with accomplished accomplices in Adrian Barry (vocals) still one of the new boys with some 16 years in front of the microphone, highly acclaimed guitarist Steve Kempson, plus George Lee (alto sax ex Jimmy Cliff and the Amboy Jukes) all powered by the drummer’s drummer the amazing Mac Poole (whose Soul background included taking over the drum stool in top Birmingham Soul band Locomotive to let  his pal John Bonham leave to try his luck with Led Zeppelin).

So a very special party night in store with the best of James Brown, Otis, Marvin, Motown and more from the Power of Soul their special guests and the up n coming Bolaji Blues Band..
